Is there a way to add and notify manufactures of orders (instead of using multiple vendors)?

Have you tried the manufacturer area? Placing in the email address there? So they get notified when their products are purchased?

I did put in an email address for the manufacturer, but when someone orders the product it doesn't send the manufacturer the confirmation email - only the user and me (store owner)

I was thinking I could use this component to have control over the emails - am I missing something?

No you're not missing anything.

You've got my email address, can I get an admin account and FTP details sent over for your site and we'll resolve the issue tomorrow.

The module should be working as you stated. So if it's not it needs to be investigated.

I think the vendor area works fine but the way I have my shop set up is that I am the only vendor.

I have a bunch of products that I make (and ship) but I have 2 that need to be shipped from a different location. So I have those two items with a different manufacture. I would like the confirmation email to be sent to me (vendor) the manufacture and the user who placed the order. Does that make sense?
