Media Street and East Devon Volunteer Services Agency (EDVSA) have teamed up to offer the opportunity exclusively for Cranbrook residents’. The aim is that the course is accessible to all skill ranges and both young and old residents.


Skills Required

All students’ must meet the following criteria:

  • Have a basic understanding of computers, such as know how to browse the Internet, how to use Microsoft word and send an email
  • Have a computer & Internet connection at their home
  • Willingness to learn a new skill and donate time to the course

NB: Depending on your skill level will depend on what your website looks like in the end.

Costs Involved

The course is being run as a trial and all helpers are donating their time free of charge. That being said there are some fixed costs (including your website i.e www.your-name.co.uk). This cost is £25 (inc VAT) and payment is required one week prior to starting the course.

Availability

Cranbrook Library has 7 computers available for the course. We therefore have limited space and people filling in the form first will get priority.

  • Meet and greet
  • Course Overview
  • Introduction to Wordpress
  • Discuss your ideal website as a group in advance of building it
Week 2 - 1st December - 19:30 to 21:00
  • Explanation of website hosting
  • Setting up a personal email address of your choice
  • Installing a blank wordpress installation
  • Installing a blank theme to your new website
Week 3 - 8th December - 19:30 to 21:00
  • Adding pages to your website
  • Adding text to your website
  • Adding pictures to your website
  • Adding navigation to your website
  • Adding contact form to your website (for advanced students)
  • Adding image rotator to your website (for advanced students)
Week 4 - 12th January - 19:30 to 21:00
  • Introduction to styling your website using basic options
  • Basic introduction of website code (HTML & CSS)
  • Introduction to editing websites using code
  • Basic start to customising your website and altering the design using code
Week 5 - 19th January - 19:30 to 21:00
  • Continue customising your website
  • 10 minute individual session with a full-time designer/web developer to offer tailored advice on how to make your website better
Week 6 - 26th January - 19:30 to 21:00
  • Finish websites
  • “show and tell” session
  • Soft drinks and nibbles
