Combat Climate Change With Media Street’s Green Web Hosting

Media Street is pleased to announce that both our linux hosting and wordpress hosting services are now powered by 100% renewable energy. All of our current and future clients will benefit from our green hosting services and together, do our bit towards reducing our carbon footprint.

Our hosting services are now being powered exclusively by wind and solar power and our data center has also been identified as extremely efficient, with a Power Usage Effectiveness (PUE) of 1.12 (the average host center has a PUE of 1.2 or higher).

How Media Street Is Helping Our Environment

As well as the roll-out of our green hosting services, Media Street has also committed to reducing our carbon footprint in as many ways as possible, during the daily running of our Exeter offices. As a digital agency in Devon, it’s important that we acknowledge the use and consumption of paper, electricity, water, as well as many other things that can contribute to climate change. That’s why, since our inception in 2010, it’s been a key focus of ours to reduce the number of materials that can harm our environment, both locally and globally.

This includes:

• Installing smart lighting throughout our offices to reduce the amount of electricity consumed. This also includes our motion sensor lighting which turns off the lights in empty hallways after 5 minutes.
• Going paperless – Media Street only uses paper for confidential or important information, estimated at under 100 pieces of paper used per year.
• Infrared heating systems for more economically and environmentally friendly heating.
• Timed switches for most plug sockets, including computers, tv monitors and staff room appliances. All staff computers are timed to switch on at 8.30am and then off at 5.45pm, reducing electricity usage during unstaffed hours. Another example of this is our main server (housed within the office) was using 26KW.h a month previously, but now with the timed switches in place, the server electricity usage is down to between 12-13KW.h.
• We have installed a double layer of insulation throughout the ceiling of our offices, which has drastically reduced heat loss during the colder months and keeps the rooms cool during the summer.
• Making the office as airtight as possible, including seals on all windows and doors to stop any cold air coming through.

We’re currently setting up a task force to initiate staff understanding of our sustainability efforts in the office and how and why we do them. Making sure everyone is on board with our initiatives to be resourceful with our carbon usage is essential in maintaining our current endeavours and reducing it even further in the future.
