SEO FAQs

How do I know which keywords to target?

At the start of any successful search engine optimisation campaign your SEO agency should go through what you think you want to rank for. Once they have that information they look at the real search engine data to see what would work and what keywords are the most effective. This is when you would know what keywords to target.

With Media Street we do this all at the very start. On month one we speak to yourself and see what you want to rank for and be visible on Google for when people search. Once we know this we start work on creating a ‘keyword proposal’ this is us taking onboard your thoughts and then also looking at Google’s data on the most used keywords and picking out the ones we feel would be most effective. Once we have done this we show you the keyword proposal and ask you to sign it off or query it. We then know what keywords to target and will work on those terms.

Knowing what keywords to target is very simple and fundamental to a good SEO campaign. A very basic example is we (Media Street) build websites – so we want to rank No.1 on Google for “Website Design”, that being said, factually “Web Design” is a lot more used by the public so we should be focusing on “Web Design” instead of “Website Design” to get the most traffic and most customers. It is a small difference in wording, but a big difference in traffic to your website.

Is SEO better than paid advertising?

SEO and paid advertising are two different forms of marketing. In a ideal world they should both be run in parallel and at all times however sometimes a clients budget might prevent this. The benefit of SEO (Search Engine Optimisation) is long term but, equally, results can take longer to be generated. In theory, after a successful SEO campaign you can stop and it can still work for you afterwards with no investment or you can ‘stop and start’ it to maintain a position as a good campaign gets you to rank ‘naturally’.

Paid advertising however is when you pay to be somewhere, such as at the top of Google, Bing or Facebook, in this instance it is great as you can instantly drive traffic to your website. The downside of paid advertising is, once you finish, you no longer get the traffic to your website.

As a result it depends on the client as to whether paid advertising or SEO is best. Both of them increase revenue and turnover so should be done for long term success. If you need instant results though paid advertising is great as it can make a significant difference within a very short period of time. If you are looking for a long term, sustainable, strategy though your marketing resources should be spread across both marketing options.

What does SEO mean?

SEO is an acronym for Search Engine Optimisation. It is the practice of getting a website or website pages ranking higher on search engines such as Google and Bing and is done by both on-site and off-site work. On-site work includes releasing content and ensuring a website is easily crawlable. Off-site work includes getting links from other websites and ensuring other websites are speaking about your website. The end goal of SEO is to increase traffic to your website.

Am I tied into a 12 month contract?

Nope! In most cases we expect (and hope!) clients to be seeing results within 3 months of us starting their campaign. Within 3 months normally the main foundation work is done and our clients start seeing a positive effect. As a result we ask for a 3 month minimum commitment for all new marketing clients. After that marketing clients are just on a montly rolling contract.
